Now famous worldwide, the shorthorn breed of cattle has a shorter history than perhaps many people would realise. Shorthorn cattle originate in fact, in the North Eastern areas of England, emerging as a cattle breed around the late 1700s.
Originally, the Shorthorn was bred with a dual-purpose – both dairy and beef production. But as with many things, closer focus breeds greater excellence, and over time the Shorthorn breed became split into two separate strands – each emphasizing either one or the other of these two qualities.
So by the second half of the 20th century – relatively recently of course – the modern versions of the Shorthorn had come into being: the Dairy Shorthorn and the Beef Shorthorn.
